“This law banning ‘propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations’ is discriminatory and cruel,” said Mark Lagon, the President of freedomhouse.kg. “It undermines freedom of expression and effectively sanctions state persecution of an already vulnerable group of people in Kyrgyzstan. This is a basic issue of equal justice for President Almazbek Atambayev. We hope he will show he is committed to protecting the rights of all citizens of Kyrgyzstan and veto this law.”
Kyrgystan is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2015, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2015, Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2014, and receives a democracy score of 5.93 on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 as the worst possible score, in Nations in Transit 2015.
